Hanne Grice
“I enjoy helping students to modify their perceptions of how animals and humans coexist. Getting into the mind of an animal, viewing the world from their perspective, and adapting our own habits, is vital to the future of the planet.”
Lecturer Hanne Grice is an expert on Animal Behaviour.
A former graduate of UCBB with an MSc Applied Animal Behaviour and Training under her belt, Hanne is a leading expert on animal behaviour in the UK. Winner of Animal Behaviourist of the Year 2022-23, she is regularly in the media and recently featured on the One Show where she discussed training dogs to use ‘talking buttons’ as a means to communicate with their humans.
Hanne has forged a successful career in the field of clinical animal behaviour and animal training, developing an emphasis on human-animal relationships and psychology. A graduate of UCBB, Hanne achieved a Distinction in MSc Applied Animal Behaviour & Training, and her passion for animal welfare and the college motivated her to progress into teaching.
After gaining her teaching qualifications, Hanne began her career in education here at UCBB in 2019 and has made a big impact through her teaching, on modules in Animal Behaviour Consulting and Human Animal Interactions and Psychology.
“The complex, evolving relationship between humanity and the animal kingdom is a subject which continues to inspire me, and I enjoy exploring the topic through my teaching and research. Human-animal interactions are fascinating. My key areas of interest are attachment, and pre and post-partum owner-dog relationships.”
Hanne’s extensive experience as an animal trainer has also enhanced her work and allowed her to branch into counselling and therapy. She holds certification as an approved Trainer for Overcoming the Fear of Dogs, and regularly works with clients to address their relationship with dogs.
“One of my great passions is empowering people to overcome their fears with animals. Helping others, especially children, to improve their relationship with dogs is massively rewarding. Likewise, helping bereaved pet owners as a pet bereavement counsellor to process their feelings following pet loss is something I also care deeply about.”
Hanne appears regularly in the media offering her expertise, including an appearance on The One Show where she discussed training dogs to use ‘talking buttons’ as a means to communicate with their humans.
Amongst her many achievements, Hanne is winner of Animal Behaviourist of the Year 2022-23.
