When the Covid19 pandemic hit our shores early last year and then began to devastate our country, for me I began to view things in a different light and developed a new lust for life. My mindset soon shifted from 'I am too old to return to education?' to 'This life really is too short'.
I decided to bite the bullet and apply for the Access to Higher Education Land-based program Animal option, from the initial online application right up to my formal interview by the course manager and then starting the course, I have encountered nothing but a high level of friendly yet professional support from all the staff at Bishop Burton College. One of my main concerns prior to starting as a mature student returning to education after almost 18yrs break, that I would maybe feel out of place or at times embarrassed, but that has never once been an issue.
I chose the access course initially as this subject was of huge interest to me and the framework of the course better suited my personal situation. Never did I imagine, like most who choose the course, would I then also aspire to go onto Higher Education. After all, I was too old and hadn't been actively learning for such a long, that to me just seemed like a ridiculous unattainable aspiration. Yet now over halfway through and having enjoyed the whole experience, from the daily college life, to making new friends and the experienced I've gained from which I have since been offered a place and the University Centre Bishop Burton. The course has helped me in many ways, but mostly helped me to realise my potential and for that I'll forever be thankful.
The quote below now resonates with me on so many levels and I am excited to see what my future holds,
"Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one."
Malcolm S. Forbes.
