One of our industry-leading partners is T H Hobson Ltd, arable dairy farmers located near York. Nick Hobson, Director at the company approached Bishop Burton College in search of a student to work on the farm. Initially apprehensive about the process of having a student placement and how it works, his worries were soon put to rest when he started working with the college and was impressed with the level of support he received throughout the process.
Nick said: “We’ve had continued support from Bishop Burton. We've had members of staff out to visit us on the farm. As well as continued telephone back up support to help us with all the training required.”
We know our students learn in many different ways. If you’re more of a practical learner then a course which offers an industry placement such as an apprenticeship, or T-Levels could be the right direction for you. Archie, a student at Bishop Burton joined T H Hobson Ltd for his industry placement and really enjoyed learning through practical experience.
"I’ve always been more of a practical learner, when they first introduced me to industry placement, I really liked the structure of it. The process was really easy, I got in contact with my course manager, she was really supportive, and before we knew it, we were up and running!"
The benefits for both students and industry partners are plain to see. Our students are able to take the theory they have been learning in the classroom and apply it to a practical setting, making them ready for the work place and giving them confidence to go forwards in their chosen career. For our partners it’s a way of securing the future of their businesses, especially in particular sectors which are struggling to recruit such as in agriculture.
Bishop Burton College is lucky enough to have been selected as one of the premier colleges to lead on an exciting new T Level launched in September. T Levels follow GCSEs and are for 16-to-19-year old's who are looking to progress in industry. The 2-year courses have been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses preparing students for work, further training or study. With benefits to both employers and students, they are an alternative route to apprenticeships, but are based on the same standards and approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education. The difference with T Levels is the amount of time spent in industry placement which will be around 1,800 hours over 2 years, this is a significant increase on most current technical education courses.
