University Centre Bishop Burton (UCBB) is delighted to announce they have been awarded a grant of over £8,000 to help support students with the rising cost of living. Awarded by the Office for Students (OfS) the monies are to help existing students during exceptional circumstances.

Earlier this year the Secretary of State wrote to the OfS regarding the necessity of funds such as this in recognition of the fact that cost of living pressures is affecting students and university level education providers such as UCBB. Whilst UCBB already has hardship fund provision for students this additional boost of funds is warmly received.

Jack Woodcock, Students Services Officer said “UCBB already has excellent provision to support students financially to achieve their academic ambitions. Through the Bishop Burton Bursary Programme and Student Opportunity Fund we are able to help over 100 students a year. This additional funding however, is fantastic as it means we are able to enable even more students realise their potential; reducing the stress associated with financial worries and allowing them to focus on their studies.”

The funds will be available to any current UCBB student who meets the eligibility criteria and will be allocated before July. This financial boost to support students during challenging financial times supplements the existing bursaries and affordable transport costs via Bishop Burton’s considerable bus routes. With its specialist, technical course provision UCBB always has one eye on the future of students with programmes that result in graduates being highly employable and ready for the world of work or further study.

“At UCBB we want to make degree level education accessible to as many as possible,” said Dr Rachael Fell-Chambers, Assistant Principal Higher Education. “This support from OfS will help us support even more students with funds to alleviate financial pressures. The significance of this support to students cannot be understated, as it removes a barrier to learning by providing them with peace of mind to wholeheartedly focus on their studies. It’s incredibly rewarding to be able to empower our students with this kind of support and I’d urge anyone who feels they are eligible to apply.”
