We know that everyone is different. That's why University Centre Bishop Burton (UCBB) has a dedicated Life Skills team to help you to unlock your full potential.

Our Life Skills team will help you to achieve your academic, career and personal life goals.

Life coaching

Our highly qualified team of Life Coaches can help you discover the best you. They will support you with a range of life skills, including:

  • Emotional and behavioural: Helping you to understand and overcome personal barriers so you can achieve your full potential.
  • Mentoring and coaching: Individual support programmes, tailored to specific needs.
  • Social engagement and interpersonal: Career coaching to help develop confident, professional and industry-ready individuals, who are armed with the interpersonal skills to engage in the professional world.
  • Health, wellbeing and resilience: Focus on all aspects of physical and mental health and wellbeing to develop resilience and life skills and life balance.

Professional and employability skills

At UCBB we work closely with our employer network to understand the professional and ‘soft skills’ that they seek in graduates. We will help you to develop skills expected by employers including:

  • Professional engagement and interactions
  • Email and telephone etiquette
  • The use of professional IT software such as Microsoft Teams

All the essential skills to make sure that you're a career-ready graduate.

Our Life Skills team is available on campus or remotely via email, telephone, webinars or video call, so distance learners can also access support.

Study support

You'll also have access to a full range of study support to help you to get to grips with the academic elements of your course.

Simon Horner

Simon Horner

Higher Education Life Coach Team Leader

Simon has worked in higher education for over 25 years and now leads our team of life coaches, dedicated to supporting students in gaining a better study/life balance. He is a Mental Health Coach and qualified in Mental Health First Aid.

Sam Marshall

Sam Marshall

Higher Education Life Coach

Sam has previously worked in Primary Education and has always had a keen interest in mental health which led me to the Life Coach Team. He specialises in coaching, mentoring and resilience in higher education. Sam is a qualified Teacher, Therapist and Mental Health First Aider.

Rob Masden

Rob Madsen

Higher Education Life Coach

Rob has worked in education for the last 13 years; starting out teaching functional skills before focusing more on careers guidance and wellbeing support. He has a teaching qualification, a degree in Youth and Community Studies and JNC accreditation in Youth Work and Community Development. 

Catherine Frear

Catherine Frear

Higher Education Life Coach

Catherine has worked in care and education for the last 20 years, as a Nursery Manager, lecturer, Educational Consultant and Coach. As well as being a qualified teacher, she has a Masters in Educational Research and a qualification in Mental Health First Aid.
