The course

This apprenticeship will help you develop your skills as a Countryside Ranger. You will be responsible for the daily management, maintenance, conservation and protection of the natural environment and to inspire people about the natural environment and encourage them to engage with their local green spaces.

You will organise, supervise and deliver specific land management, conservation and community engagement tasks and manage small scale projects.

Mandatory qualifications include:

Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Brushcutters and Trimmers

Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid

IOT Localised Yorkshire and Humber

Yorkshire and Humber Institute of Technology

Course Information

  • Principles of Financial Management
  • Applications for Different Machinery, Tools and Equipment
  • Organise and Prioritise Environmental and Land Management Work
  • Recruit, Train, Supervise, Motivate and Manage Volunteers and Staff
  • Identify the Unique Range of Native and Invasive Species and Habitats

You will need to be aged 18+ and have appropriate employment in the environmental and conservation industry.

It is preferable that you have a minimum GCSE grade 4/C in English and Maths. If you don't have Level 2 English and Maths you will need to achieve this level prior to taking the end point assessment.

You will develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours through theory and practocal-based lessons. A blended learning approach is beneficial - you will have face to face and online lessons

You will be released from work for a block of time to undertake training at college.

Employed within the industry, you will work 30 - 40 hours per week.
You will be assessed through an end point assessment (EPA) and graded pass or distinction. Please note that the duration does not include the EPA.
  • Stationery, such as pens and paper
  • An electronic device, i.e. a laptop
  • Boots, hi-vis vest and appropriate outdoor clothing for practical sessions
You may wish to progress to our Environmental Conversation foundation degrees.
On completion of the apprenticeship, you may be able to progress to management level positions within the industry.
