Charlotte - Floristry Design

Charlotte returned to higher education to retrain as a floral artist following 15 years in employment. Returning as a mature student enabled her to fully appreciate the course and the exciting opportunities it created for her.

"I’ve always liked art and floristry, so mixing the pair together, creating installations opposed to day-to-day floristry has always been what I’ve been about. Prior to studying at University Centre Bishop Burton (UCBB) I had worked in a range of different areas; adult’s mental health, children’s mental health, and I was a chef.

I always thought education wasn’t for me as I am more of a practical learner and struggled with theory, but I have loved this course. It has scarily flown by, but I have really enjoyed it. The tutors have been great throughout, and they’ve always been super supportive. I did a short course in floristry initially before landing a job in the industry and choosing to study at higher level."

"I chose to focus my dissertation piece, entitled ‘Emancipation’ on breaking out of the social norms and accepting you, being who you want to be regardless of what anyone else thinks of you. After leaving UCBB the aim is to look at doing a terrarium-based house plant floristry business, but more on the art side opposed to the commercial side."
